Chill Music, Light Shows And The Nashville Sky

Adventure Science Center is known for their amazing adults-only (or adult-centric) events that cater to the kid in you. One of our favorites is Second Saturday at Sudekum Planetarium. This month’s multi-show event covers the spectrum from deep space exploration to electro-pop laser light experiences.

Here are three reasons Second Saturday is one of our top picks this weekend in Nashville.

Pop & EDM Light Shows

When is the last time you experienced the Beach Boys and Skrillex in the same place? If it ever occurred to you to put those two together, we are willing to bet you can’t remember it. And even if you could, you probably didn’t get the added bonus of dazzling high-tech lasers, star projectors and custom-designed video effects.

Take a break from staring down at your phone and let Adventure Science Center cue up the tunes while you look up and marvel.

Planet Nine (Beyond Pluto)

Look, we are all still a little confused about losing our pet planet Pluto, and the ensuing loss of our favorite grade school acronyms for the nine planets. (My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas was our fave.) Now that Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet, we can go back to happily singing those verses.

But while Pluto is the end of our own planetary repertoire, “Pluto Killer” Mike Brown and his team of astronomers are just getting started. Even if we haven’t learned anything about our solar system since we hit puberty, this team is making new discoveries about how our Solar System formed — and what it may be hiding. For example, Eris, Haumea and Sedna. These could be celebrity baby names (and probably will be soon enough), but they are actually distant objects that Planet Nine creators are exploring. See, you’re already learning something!

Skies Over Nashville

skies over nashville

If you’re looking for an earlier night out and a more traditional (albeit equally fantastic) planetarium experience, Skies Over Nashville is probably your best bet. In this live show experience, an ASC educator will show you how to spot and identify Nashville’s seasonal constellations, stars, planets and other interesting sky objects.

What better way to appreciate the city we love than to wonder at the stars above?

In the famous words of Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“If the stars should appear but one night every thousand years how man would marvel and stare.”
