Intro to Precious Metal Clay: Making a Custom Pendant or Pet Tag

947 Woodland Street | Nashville, TN 37206

Want to make a unique pendant but don't know traditional metalsmithing techniques? PMC (precious metal clay) is super easy to work with and opens up a new world of jewelry making to anyone regardless of experience.

So what exactly is PMC? It's a clay made from microscopic powdered metal particles mixed with an organic binder and water. PMC is soft, smooth, and workable like traditional modeling clay and after forming and working, it's fired in a kiln. As the kiln heats up the clay to just below the point of liquefaction, the binder burns away, causing the metal particles to sinter, or fuse to each other, transforming them into a solid metal form. After firing, the metal piece can be further altered using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as soldering, filing, and hammering.

In this workshop, you'll learn the basics of working with PMC including how to handle, shape, texture, fire and finish metal clay. In addition, some basic jewelry-making techniques will be demonstrated, such as painting your new piece and working with jump rings.
